In the election year of 2008, the Earth Experience club at Southern Regional High School gave the students the chance to take a three day bus trip to our nation’s capital to watch history be made; the inauguration of our nations’ first African-American president, Mr. Barack Obama. I was lucky enough to go on the trip. It really was a once in a lifetime experience. We left on a cold January morning on a Trolley Tours bus and made our way to Washington, D.C. Not many people went; it was 20 students and three chaperones. When we go to D.C. we went to Pentagon City Mall to get something to eat and do a little shopping. The group from Southern was in the food court when we saw a certain Mr. John McCain (Obama’s Presidential opponent) and his wife City McCain eating lunch. Everyone was trying to take pictures of the two and started crowding all around them. They had to leave the Mall but did stop outside. We actually were able to get pictures, autographs and have a quick word with the Senator from Arizona. We then went to the Inaugural Concert, which featured musical artists from U2’s Bono to Usher. We all huddled together to make sure none of us got lost in the massive crowd and to keep warm.
The next day, we went to all the historical landmarks around D.C.; the Washington Monument (which was still open at the time so we were able to go to the top). Lincoln Monument, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, World War II Memorial and some other memorials I don’t remember. It was all very fast because we were only there for three days. That night we met with all the other schools from around the country for a dance. It was really fun and cool to meet so many different people from all around the country. When we got back to the hotel, we all passed out with our alarms set to leave the next morning at 6 AM to get as close to the Capital as we could as the whole world was about to watch history be made.
We woke up early to a chilling temperature of 20 degrees. We were all exhausted from walking all around the day before and busting a move that night. It took us about 2 hours to walk from our bus to the National Mall. When we got there, we were all numb from head to toe. After shoving about 20 Mega Hand Warmers in my sleeves, legs and back, I sat down on the blanket and got comfortable (if you considered huddling with 19 other students in a small space with about 1.8 million strangers around you, comfortable). We waited what seemed like hours and hours for the President to appear. I was so cold; I was ready to leave at any possible time. Finally, you could hear the music and you knew something was happening. In the end, Barack Obama, the nation’s first African-American president was sworn into office. All the people in that crowd (and around the nation) cheered and came together as a country to congratulate the huge accomplishment Mr. President had achieved.
In January of 2013, the students of Southern Regional have the same opportunity that I and many other students had; to go to our nation’s capital and watch the Presidential Inauguration (either Mr. Obama for a 2nd term or a new president). The trip will last four days; January 18, 19, 20 and 21. The tours to be included in this trip will be the National Archives, Arlington Cemetery, Mount Vernon, The Capital Grounds, and Virginia’s Great Falls National Park. Students may also visit the Pentagon and Supreme Court (pending approval). The memorials that will be visited include the Lincoln Memorial, World War II, FDR, MLK, Jr., Iwo Jima, Korean War, Vietnam and the Jefferson Memorial. The students will also go the Inaugural Concert and fireworks. The students and chaperones will be staying at the Green Belt Marriot during the trip. Forty five students will be allowed on the trip and registration will stay open until May 1st. I would highly recommend going on this trip. It was a great experience and I had an awesome time.
