Seussical the Musical Review

“The pageantry, the costumes. Wow, what a musical,” (Will Ferrell in The Other Guys).  Sure, in its original, cinematic context this quote was meant to describe the Broadway hit Jersey Boys, but with a run like that, Seussical, at our very own Southern Regional, can borrow  Ferrell’s words  for the time being.  The cast and crew are certainly deserving.

From the beginning to the end, the viewer was catapulted into a whimsical world of Seuss as bright colors cascading in the spotlights of the stage caught the glow of each actors glimmering expression.  The costumes were unexpected.  One might realistically expect the budgetary confines of a school event to restrain the “wow-power” of the costumes, but what appeared on stage contradicted this very assumption.  Lively colors, imaginative design, and unorthodox accessories (simply Dr. Seuss of course) were donned by the animated characters.  Classic Seuss stories like The Grinch, Green Eggs and Ham, The Cat in the Hat, and Whorton Hears a Who, were brought to the stage in a clashed, yet balanced frenzy, while humorous music followed, as a silly symphony.  Danielle Andriani, a student at Southern Regional High School stated, “I loved it.  I thought John Reilly (the Cat in the Hat) was hilarious, especially when he interacted with the crowd.  I liked how the actors used the aisle ways as part of their stage.”  Seussical was an enjoyable play because of the youthful and adult-like elements.  Children laughed at the nonsensical features while adults laughed at the subtle, and in some cases risqué, humor.  The play was a laugh for all, and on the high school level, an absolute explosion of brilliance.

Experience This!

In the election year of 2008, the Earth Experience club at Southern Regional High School gave the students the chance to take a three day bus trip to our nation’s capital to watch history be made; the inauguration of our nations’ first African-American president, Mr. Barack Obama.  I was lucky enough to go on the trip.  It really was a once in a lifetime experience.  We left on a cold January morning on a Trolley Tours bus and made our way to Washington, D.C.  Not many people went; it was 20 students and three chaperones.  When we go to D.C. we went to Pentagon City Mall to get something to eat and do a little shopping.  The group from Southern was in the food court when we saw a certain Mr. John McCain (Obama’s Presidential opponent) and his wife City McCain eating lunch.  Everyone was trying to take pictures of the two and started crowding all around them.  They had to leave the Mall but did stop outside.  We actually were able to get pictures, autographs and have a quick word with the Senator from Arizona.    We then went to the Inaugural Concert, which featured musical artists from U2’s Bono to Usher.  We all huddled together to make sure none of us got lost in the massive crowd and to keep warm.

The next day, we went to all the historical landmarks around D.C.; the Washington Monument (which was still open at the time so we were able to go to the top). Lincoln Monument, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, World War II Memorial and some other memorials I don’t remember.  It was all very fast because we were only there for three days.  That night we met with all the other schools from around the country for a dance.  It was really fun and cool to meet so many different people from all around the country.  When we got back to the hotel, we all passed out with our alarms set to leave the next morning at 6 AM to get as close to the Capital as we could as the whole world was about to watch history be made.

We woke up early to a chilling temperature of 20 degrees.  We were all exhausted from walking all around the day before and busting a move that night.  It took us about 2 hours to walk from our bus to the National Mall.  When we got there, we were all numb from head to toe.  After shoving about 20 Mega Hand Warmers in my sleeves, legs and back, I sat down on the blanket and got comfortable (if you considered huddling with 19 other students in a small space with about 1.8 million strangers around you, comfortable).  We waited what seemed like hours and hours for the President to appear.  I was so cold; I was ready to leave at any possible time.  Finally, you could hear the music and you knew something was happening.  In the end, Barack Obama, the nation’s first African-American president was sworn into office.  All the people in that crowd (and around the nation) cheered and came together as a country to congratulate the huge accomplishment Mr. President had achieved.

In January of 2013, the students of Southern Regional have the same opportunity that I and many other students had; to go to our nation’s capital and watch the Presidential Inauguration (either Mr. Obama for a 2nd term or a new president).  The trip will last four days; January 18, 19, 20 and 21.  The tours to be included in this trip will be the National Archives, Arlington Cemetery, Mount Vernon, The Capital Grounds, and Virginia’s Great Falls National Park.  Students may also visit the Pentagon and Supreme Court (pending approval).  The memorials that will be visited include the Lincoln Memorial, World War II, FDR, MLK, Jr., Iwo Jima, Korean War, Vietnam and the Jefferson Memorial.  The students will also go the Inaugural Concert and fireworks.  The students and chaperones will be staying at the Green Belt Marriot during the trip.  Forty five students will be allowed on the trip and registration will stay open until May 1st.  I would highly recommend going on this trip.  It was a great experience and I had an awesome time.

Prom Proposals

Grand Proposals

So this question goes out to all the gentlemen attending prom, and making sweet gestures to the women they plan to take. What extraordinary lengths would you go to, to ask a girl out to prom? Would you serenade her with a song? Slip a love letter into her locker? Announce it to her publically? The romantics here at Southern Regional have plenty of stories. It’s been reported that Grant Geary asked a girl during an SNN live segment, but that’s just one good way to approach asking a girl out to prom. I have even come up with a sweet letter to the special somebody I like. I think you have to be an old school romantic in order to woo a girl. Prom is still a far way off, so to every guy out there, my advice is quite simple. Be CUTE, girls out there will love you for it, so don’t be embarrassed.

Prom Dazzlers 2012

As prom season 2012 is readily approaching, most girls are trying their best to find the “perfect” prom dress. There is a dress for everyone out there and with these tips on the trends of 2012; hopefully I will make your search easier. From various red carpet events such as the Oscars, celebrities are setting the mold for what some of the hottest dress styles are. This year if long gowns are your thing, take a look at Victoria Beckham’s dress from the Oscars. It is a long, straight, strapless dress that really shows off her petite frame. Other big hits are prints and bright colors. Whether it is a short or a long dress, you can go with a bright color to show off your own individualistic style. A predicted top seller this year is orange. As strange as it seems, it really looks great on any skin tone, especially when you are tanner from the warmer weather. Another style that is really selling with the celebs is the one shoulder look. If you want to have a great time dancing without having to worry about pulling your strapless dress up all night, this is a perfect solution for you. Also, for senior prom, if you think that you’re going to be annoyed all night wearing a long dress, then go for a shorter one! It’s not the end of the world if you don’t follow the stereotypical trend of wearing a long dress, you should do what makes you feel satisfied. A final idea that is sure to make you sparkle under the lights is a dress with sequins on it. Celebrities such as Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift have been seen sporting gorgeous gowns covered in sequins that really look phenomenal on them. I hope that some of these tips may aid you in your search for a prom dress and remember, have fun with it!

All Dance Diet

Though Zumba originated in Colombia by Beto Perez in the mid-90s, it has recently taken over gyms and recreational centers worldwide.  Millions of people world-wide have exercised and enjoyed the benefits of an exciting Zumba class.  In case you have never heard of it, Zumba is a dance class with a zesty Latin beat that incorporates the dances of Cumbia, Salsa, Merengue, Mamba, and Flamenco into one great exercise.  In a Zumba class, the instructor will stand in the front of the room and the class mirrors her moves; even the worst dancers can enjoy Zumba because nobody is perfect at perfecting the moves!

On February 7th, Southern Regional is hosting our very own Zumba event with certified Zumba instructor Heather McKenna!  It costs only $5 dollars for students and $10 for adults to join in an exciting time.  What’s more, it not only is an excellent opportunity to get moving and have fun, but the proceeds also benefit each class of Southern Regional.  Whether you are a freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior, there is no reason to miss out on such a talked-about and proactive event!

Timely Traditions

“Christmas is a time to say I love you” as the old festive song sings.  While Christmas, without a doubt, is a time of joy and love, the holiday often means many different traditions to different people of our own town, state, and country.  Some celebrate Christmas a few weeks in advance as they traditionally vacation for the actual day, and others must patiently wait until the big day of December 25th

One senior gets the best of both worlds as she says that every year she “goes somewhere different for the holiday, whether it is Montana, Barbados, or Wyoming, yet her family still brings the wrapped presents along”.  Other American families head to church every Christmas Eve, leave cookies out, hang their stockings, and cuddle up in their own cozy bed.  When the clock finally ticks midnight, some struggle to count sheep and fall asleep until an appropriate hour to wake everybody.  Sarah Hodgson said that every year her family plays a board game together after breakfast.  Whatever your own family’s traditions may be, enjoy the time of celebration and love, and “have yourself a merry, little Christmas”!

“Witch” Costume is Best for You?

It’s that time of the year again for pumpkins, candy apples and  ghost masks, also with the up coming fall season approaching and thoughts of Halloween in sight, one must start to consider ideas for their newest selection for this year’s Halloween costume. Halloween is the time of the year to show off your creativity, artistic ability and most importantly to get some free candy in the process.

Whether you are dressing up with a group of friends to trick or treat or just flying solo there is an extensive selection of Halloween costumes to choose from.   The classic costumes that seem to make an impeccable come back year after year are the “Witch” or the “Pumpkin” costume. Then there are some of the newer ideas for this year that have just come out. Some of the costume ideas that seem to be the most popular this year so far would have to be the super hero costumes that correlate to their newly released movie. For example “Captain America” and the “Green Lantern” are coming up in almost all Halloween stores best selling categories.  Then there are the group trick-or-treaters that go out dressed up as their favorite group of television characters such as maybe the “Flintstones” or another popular one is “The Spice Girls”.

Even if you are not actually trick-or-treating you can still join in on the fun, say if you do not especially appreciate the concept of dressing up, but you are going to be driving to a costume party or just around you can do simple things to dress up your vehicle.  With a Car Marker form any convenience store you can add a small “Decepticon” or ”Auto Bot” logo from the Transformers series to make your car look like a Transformer.  Also with the same marker you can add a number to the car to make it look like a NASCAR.  The possibilities are endless for a great Halloween costume so use your imagination and make it a great Halloween too.

College is Calling

Calling all juniors, seniors and even sophomores, this is for you! With the increasing number of competitive colleges springing up, it can be hard to decide on which one is right for you. According to US News, the top ten colleges in the United States as of 2010 are: Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Columbia, California Institute of Technology, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford, University of Chicago, University of Pennsylvania, and Duke, all in that order. Even though these colleges are ranked the best to some people, they may not be the best for you.

In order to find your dream college, you need to get a head start on the process. First you need think about what interests you for your future career path in life. Once you brainstorm a couple things, then you can start researching to see what majors may interest you. The next step is to then to begin your search of what colleges have your intended majors. Whether it is in the medical field or the culinary arts, there is a college that is the perfect fit for everyone. If you do sports, check out the teams! See what teams and divisions seem like they would be the best fit for you. Even email or call the coach if you’re serious about it. After you get a feel of things, go out and visit the school! Whether it is just a tour or a committed summer program, the exposure is all that counts. One senior at Southern took a summer course at her dream school on the other side of the country and couldn’t have been happier about the experience. “It really opened my eyes to how different college life is from high school, and it excites me for the future.” This should encourage everyone that the right college is out there waiting for you, you just have to start looking for it.
