What is the SRD SEPTA?
The Southern Regional District Special Education PTA (SEPTA) was formed on January 23, 2008. We are a group focused on the Special Education community. As parents, we were involved in groups in the past trying to figure out where our child would fit in. Well, they are not exactly children anymore and many of us are wondering where they will fit in next. We support the parents and the school system in helping our kids prepare for what is ahead of them.
We have held several fundraising events such as T-shirt and sweatshirt sales as well as Proceeds Nights at McDonalds and Sweet Jenny's. The funds have enabled us to provide several scholarships to graduating special needs students as well as to deserving students who have gone above and beyond to help the special needs community. We have also been able to provide our special needs classes with class gifts to assist with outings and other projects. We have invited informative speakers, such as Dr. Yvette Janvier (Children's Specialized Hospital), Mr. Herbert Hinkle (Hinkle, Fingles and Prior Law Firm) and Lisa Kwapis (Meadowedge Social Group) to inform our parents of special needs kids. As we continue to grow, we hope to provide even more for our students, parents and teachers.
A major part of our efforts is geared toward the continuation of the Ocean County Challenger Sports League. This enables our kids to proudly represent their High School, learn skills/sportsmanship and form friendships with each other as well as with their 'buddies' from the regular sports teams. Our SEPTA has provided Appreciation Events at the end of each season, allowing the kids to get together socially as well as on the field. The bonds formed are exciting to witness.
