Even before Acting Governor Cody signed the State Law ( N.J.S.A. 18A:6-111) aimed at addressing a void of information in schools about depression, Southern Regional was researching proactive approaches to help our students who develop and live with the mental health illness of depression. After careful review of the current research on the topic, staff recommended to the district administration, and the Board of Education, that Southern build a program that fits our needs using the SOS: Signs of Suicide Program as a core unit.
The SOS: Signs of Suicide program is highly acclaimed and is endorsed by all the key organizations who share the mission of helping students at risk. To name a few: The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, The American School Counselor Association and The National Association of School Psychologists.
The program is currently offered to 9th graders as a part of the 9th Grade Health Curriculum.
