High School

Art

The exceptional art department compares favorably to many college art programs and is a portrait of the diverse strengths which characterize Southern Regional High School in general. Unlike most high school art courses, Southern offers sequential levels of specialized studio art instruction in the areas of painting and drawing, sculpture, pottery, and interior design. The college model is clearly reflected in the AP Studio Art where students have the opportunity to earn college credits. Art teachers instruct in their respective areas of expertise and many of them are exhibiting professional artists. Art is not the frivolous diversion that many believe but rather an essential, serious, creative and intellectual endeavor that:

  • Profoundly expresses what it is to be human.
  • Develops problem solving and higher level thinking skills that apply to any human enterprise.
  • Is interdisciplinary in nature and reinforces learning across the curriculum.
  • Is the inspired creation of works of art, art history, art criticism, aesthetics and philosophy of our civilization.

Southern is committed to a portfolio-based program which celebrates and draws attention to the individual student and to the work. We promote student work through a variety of exhibitions within the district and through out the community. Our success can be measured by the large number of students who have gone on to study art at the college level and pursue careers in art.
