ESL, a place to stand until I am ready to move the earth...

The English as a Second Language (ESL) program is designed to develop and/or improve English language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing with a focus on enabling students to learn in other content areas. The ESL program also helps students to learn and develop those skills that help them to function effectively in social and academic contexts. At Southern Regional, the non-English or limited-English speaking students originate from many countries representing a variety of languages and cultures. Students’ English language proficiency levels are tested upon entering school and annually at the end of the year (with the ACCESS test) as required by the State of New Jersey. Multiple criteria are used to determine when students are ready to exit the ESL program.
